There is, however, no documented evidence to confirm or refute that suggestion and we are equally uncertain as to when in David’s reign the district that formed the urban parish of St Giles was detached from its probable mother-church at the north-west of the Castle Rock. ![]() ( 1) The location of the church at around the mid-point of the burgh’s footprint and adjacent to its market area is strongly suggestive of it being part of the original planned burgh layout. It is likely that the parish of St Giles was carved out of the much larger territory of the parish of St Cuthbert (qv) around the time that King David I was encouraging the development of the burgh on the spine of the ridge that extended east from the castle.
